ABOUT BOXING

Boxing is a combat sport. The first documented "boxing match" took place in 1681 in Britian It is a game in which two participants of similar weight fight whith each other with their fists. The fighters wear padded gloves, attacking and defending only with fists. Each bout generally lasts for three minutes and the winner is the one who lands the most punches or knocks out his opponent and opponent unable to get up before the referee counts ten. Boxing is also called Pugilism and prizefighting. The balanced stance is the starting point for all boxing moves. If the stance is not executed correctly, it's very difficult to perform the punches and footwork safely and effectively. Place feet comfortably apart. Put your weight on the balls of your feet. A boxing match typically consists of a predetermined number of three-minute rounds. A minute is typically spent between each round with the fighters in their assigned corners receiving advice and attention from their coach and staff. There are different two kinds of boxing, Amateur boxing, professional boxing.Proper stance is the key to executing all boxing moves correctly. The jab is first punch which the boxer learn. And jab is the busiest punch in boxing, although not considered to be a power punch, it can cause a lot of damage over the course of a bout.
To fight successfully a boxer must employ the right boxing techniques for himself. You must follow your plan. For a start you should study your opponent and look for his weak points. And attack them relentlessly so you can get the better of him. Your training and boxing skills will play a big part in your success. You need to develop a full armoury of punches for yourself before you first get in the ring. The more punches you can throw effectively the harder it is for any opponent to defeat you.Anither punch is, right cross it is a power punch but because of the weight transfer it can also leave you exposed without a boxer's stance for a split second. This is why it is important to return back to guard as quick as possible. There are three main types of styles that boxers fall into when boxing. These reflect how they move and how they punch. The first style is the Brawler.A lot of brawlers are able to throw a punch which can knock out an opponent in a single blow. The next type of style is that of the Inside Fighter. This type of style is usually played very aggressively. The final type of style is that of the Outside Fighter. Boxers who use this style type will generally stay toward the outside of the ring and work on keeping their opponents away from them.

RUGBY

The men’s rugby team got a chance to play in warmer surroundings on a trip to Argentina over Reading Week.
The Queen’s rugby club sent two teams to Argentina for games in Buenos Aires and the resort town of Mar Tel Plata. The second team lost two hard-fought games, but the first squad rallied in Mar Tel Plata after being down 12-5 to score three tries in the final 15 minutes of the game to win 27-19.
Ryan Kruyne, Colin Alexander, Graham Watt, Tim Richardson and Zach Pancer scored tries for Queen’s, with Kruyne also kicking two conversions.
The win was the team’s first over a men’s team on tour since their trip to Ireland in 1999.
Tour co-ordinator and fifth-year player Colin Frenke said the trip gave the players a chance to work on team chemistry.
“Because we had two teams it worked out really well, the younger guys get to know the older guys. … There was a lot of cohesion,” he said. “It was nice to get that final win.”
The team’s season finished in November, which meant they had to rent a horse-training area north of Kingston to stay in game shape.
“I think without the training the final game wouldn’t have gone as well,” Frenke said.
The team’s trip began on Feb. 16 in Buenos Aires, where the second team fell 41-5 to the host team and the first team suffered a 24-10 defeat.
Head coach Peter Huigenbos said the second team had an admirable first half, but “forgot how to tackle in the second half.”
Feb. 21 in Marta Del Plata the second squad had tries from Graeme Dibden, Dan Taggart, Dan Salvatore and Mike Readshaw, but couldn’t quite seal the deal in a 24-22 loss.
Huigenbos said the team had played in Mar Tel Plata and lost on their last tour in 2001, so the first team’s win was meaningful and his team was ready for the Argentinian style of rugby.

ABOUT CRICKET

There are a few jillion sports out there that I know exactly zero about, each with its own uniform protocols and history. So from time to time I want to let a knowledgeable reader fill us in on one of these lesser-known games — think of it as the Uni Watch Underappreciated Sports Program (even though, let’s face it, most of them are probably underappreciated for good reason). Kicking us off is Steve Jarvis, who has this to say on the subject of cricket:
Cricket is played over various formats. The first is test match cricket, or simply test cricket, which is played over five days and is traditionally played in “whites,” consisting of white trousers and a white shirt. Uniforms for test cricket have evolved slightly over the years, going from a standard dress clothes to performance apparel like this and this.
The first cricket world cup was played in 1975, and this is when a newer format, called one-day cricket, went mainstream at the highest level. During that world cup, uniforms were essentially the same as in test cricket. But throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, one-day cricket became a huge hit with fans due to its faster more exciting pace. In an effort to give cricket a “cool” makeover, coloured clothing was introduced, and the traditional red ball was replaced with a white ball. (As an aside, here’s an article on how cricket balls are made.)
As the popularity of one-day cricket has increased, various spin-offs have been invented, the most recent of which is Twenty20 (pronounced “twenty-twenty”), a short, fast-paced game with a finish inside of three hours.
Twenty20 cricket was first introduced in England in 2003. Entrance music for players, fireworks, and other things are being used, which has resulted in record crowds attending matches and increased sponsorship and TV coverage — along with lots of logo creep, sponsorship all over clothing and bats, and lots of very bad uniforms.

CAR RACING

Sports car racing is a form of circuit auto racing with automobiles that have two seats and enclosed wheels. They may be purpose-built or related to road-going sports cars.
A kind of hybrid between the purism of open-wheelers and the familiarity of touring car racing, this racing is often associated with the annual Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race. First run in 1923, it is one of the oldest motor races still in existence. Other classic but now defunct sports car races include the Italian classics the Targa Florio (1906 - 1977) and Mille Miglia (1927-1957), and the Mexican Carrera Panamericana. Most top class sports car races emphasise endurance (races are typically anywhere from 2.5 to 24 hours in length), reliability and strategy over pure speed. Longer races usually involve complex pit strategy and regular driver changes - sports car racing is seen more as a team sport than a gladiatorial individual sport and team managers like John Wyer, Tom Walkinshaw, driver-turned-constructor Henri Pescarolo, Peter Sauber and Reinhold Joest have become almost as famous as many of their drivers.
The prestige of Ferrari, BMW, Porsche, Lotus, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, and Aston Martin derives in part from success in sports car racing and the World Sportscar Championship. Road cars sold by these manufacturers have in many cases been very similar to the cars that were raced, both in engineering and styling. It is this close association with the 'exotic' nature of the cars that serves as a useful distinction between sports car racing and Touring Cars.
The 12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Daytona, and 24 Hours of Le Mans were once widely considered to be the trifecta of sports car racing; driver Ken Miles would have been the only driver to win all three in the same year, but an error in the team orders of the Ford GT40 team at Le Mans in 1966 took the win from him, although he finished first.

HORSE RIDING

Horse riding is a great form of exercise which has both cardiovascular and muscle conditioning benefits. Although it may seem as though the rider is not engaging in any physical exercise, an hour’s activity can burn similar calories to that of a 30-minute jog (6mph) or cycle ride (9mph). Therefore, all the health benefits associated with engaging in regular cardiovascular exercise are gained. After your first ride you may feel muscles that you never knew you had. This is due to the movement of the horse and its affect on the rider during the ride. As the rider reacts to the horse’s movements to avoid becoming off balance, the deep postural muscles of the trunk and pelvis and the adductor muscles of the thighs are continuously being conditioned. Psychological:Horse riding is recognized as having excellent therapeutic qualities. The psychological benefits can be of equal importance to riders as the physical benefits. Simply being outdoors and enjoying the countryside will boost your general well-being and act as a great stress buster. There is a real sense of exhalation and freedom when you ride, a feeling that is second to none. Furthermore, developing a relationship and sense of trust between yourself and your horse is highly rewarding. Learning to control and care for an animal much larger than yourself can have a profound affect on your confidence and is a great feeling

BIKE RIDERS

THOUSANDS of saucy cyclists from all over the world have bared all on their bikes during the World Naked Bike Ride. Revealing riders from 40 destinations, such as Europe and the US, took part in the international event to raise awareness of cyclists, their safety on the roads and environmental issues. In France bikers were paraded alongside cars pumping out various songs such as All Things Small, while in Chicago crowds cheered and “hi-fived” participants.
One passer-by was dumb-struck when a male rider rode to the curb in his underwear and asked for a light for his cigarette. Over 1000 cyclists stripped off in the 6th annual World Naked Bike Ride in London to protest against oil dependency and car culture. Cyclists were covered in body paint branded with anti-oil slogans as they rode into London’s West End, passing the Houses of Parliament.
Surprisingly, the Metropolitan Police stopped traffic to allow the cyclists an easy passage through the busy streets. “We took part last year and it was amazing,” one rider told London’s ITN.”It’s a great cause, it’s great to get naked, and it’s a great carnival atmosphere. It’s one of the best events in London.”

MOUNTAIN BIKE RACEING

Downhill mountain biking is a subset of mountain biking in which riders only ride down hill, usually a mountain. This form of mountain biking usually involves VERY rough terrain with dirt, loose gravel, rocks, ladder bridges, jumps, drops, and anything else you can think of that you would find in the woods. For this reason, the mountain bike used for downhill mountain biking must be a full suspension. In addition, it must be strong enough to withstand the abuse given during downhill mountain biking. For this reason, downhill mountain bikes have been invented.

FOOTBALL FIELD

This is a no-brainer. Football is a contact sport -- it almost looks like combat. There is bound to be some pain on the football field. Good technique, however, can go a long way toward minimizing football injuries.

FOOTBALL

Modern football has evolved from a game played in streets and schools in the mid 1800s to the most widely played game on earth played in almost every town and village in the world, from youngsters kicking a ball about in the streets and local league teams playing for local honour to vast stadiums where the multi million pound clubs draw up to 100,000 fans each week.
Eleven players a side, with the aim to put the ball in the opposition goal. Simplicity itself! Olympic football competition has a few extra rules however. As professionals are allowed to play there is an age restriction on players. There are 16 men’s teams in the Olympic competition and teams are limited to only three players over the age of 23. Twelve women’s teams are allowed in the competition, which doesn’t have any age restrictions.

WOMEN VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball is one of the truly global world sports, played in sports halls and arenas at the top international level and in the open air, in parks, in open spaces and on beaches throughout the world. Over 800 million players worldwide play volleyball regularly, at least once a week. This makes Volleyball one of the most popular indoor team sports in the world.
Volleyball is a game that can cater for all no matter what age or sex, disabled or able-bodied. It can be played both indoors, in a gym or a sports hall or outside in a park or on the beach. Different versions of the game also exist so the game can be played two, three and four a side, as well as the more usual six a side.

ROLLER HOCKEY

Roller hockey (quad) is the overarching name for a roller sport that has existed since long before inline skates were invented. Roller hockey has been played in sixty countries worldwide and so has many names worldwide. The sport is also known as quad hockey, hóquei em patins, international style ball hockey, rink hockey and hardball hockey. Roller Hockey was a demonstration roller sport at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics

ICE HOCKEY

Ice hockey (frequently simply called hockey in countries where it is the most popular form of hockey) is a team sport played on ice, in which skaters use sticks to direct a puck into the opposing team's goal. It is a fast-paced and physical sport. Ice hockey is most popular in areas that are sufficiently cold for natural reliable seasonal ice cover, such as Canada, the northern United States, Scandinavia, and Russia. With the advent of indoor artificial ice rinks it has become a year-round pastime in these areas. Ice hockey is one of the four major North American professional sports. Worldwide the National Hockey League (NHL) is the highest level for men and the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) and the Western Women's Hockey League (WWHL) are the highest level for women. It is the official national winter sport of Canada, where the game enjoys immense popularity. While only six of the thirty NHL franchises are based in Canada, Canadians make up a slight majority of the league's players.
While there are 66 total members of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), 162 of 177 medals at IIHF World Championships have been taken by seven nations: Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and the United States[1][2]. Of the 63 medals awarded in men's competition at the Olympic level from 1920 on, only six did not go to the one of those countries. All nine Olympic and 27 IIHF World Women Championships medals have gone to one of those seven countries.[3][4]

HOCKEY GIRLS

Now Shahbad is one of 20-odd Indian towns that have a synthetic hockey playfield. Incidentally, this is one town that has produced captains of both Indian men and women teams. As chance would have it, both have the same name. The men’s skipper has been famous drag flicker Sandeep Singh while Sandeep Kaur led India’s women team. And again it has been Shahbad girl, Surinder Kaur that led India from front to help it win the first Champions Challenger II in Kazan, Russia, on June 27.
Though Haryana cannot match the contribution of its neighbour Punjab in the field of hockey but it has earned a name for itself during the past 16 years, producing 27 women and six men players who represented India in various international tournaments, including Olympic games, World Cups, Asia Cup and Asian Games.
Until early 1990s, the town did not have even basic facilities, including a hockey field. One of private schools had an uneven and unkempt playfield. Both girls and boys, mostly from poor families, not only worked hard to convert it into a lushful green hockey playfield but also made their presence felt with some superb performances in the tournaments they played. Be it schools tournaments or even state and national championships. They earned a niche for themselves because of their superb ball control skills, delectable body swerves and their commitment to the game.

ABOUT GOLF

Golf is a precision stick-and-ball sport in which competing players (golfers), using many types of clubs, attempt to hit balls into each hole on a golf course while employing the fewest number of strokes. Golf is one of the few ball games that does not require a standardized playing area. Instead, the game is played on golf "courses", each of which features a unique design, although courses typically consist of either nine or 18 holes. Golf is defined, in the rules of golf, as "playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules". Golf competition is generally played for the lowest number of strokes by an individual, known simply as stroke play, or the lowest score on the most individual holes during a complete round by an individual or team, known as match play.

MARIO LEMIEUX

It already seems like a long time ago that Mario Lemieux towered over the game on the ice.
Along with the larger-than-life skills and Stanley Cup championships, Lemieux's career was defined by several dramatic twists that are almost too much to believe: the cancer fight; the comebacks; the Olympic gold medal...

TENNIS SHOTS

To play tennis competitively there are certain tennis shots that the tennis player must learn. Each of these shots have variations that may play into a players strengths or style of play. Shots that are important include the forehand, backhand, serve, volley, lob and drop shot. Each shot has a certain time in a point where it is best played. Professional tennis players practice hours upon hours to perfect these shots and turn them into winners. Some shots like the overhead smash are primarily attack shots or offensive shots, other shots like the lob are primarily used for defense.

All of these tennis shots can be further enhanced and the ball controlled to the players advantage by putting spin on the ball while making the shot. Topspin will usually cause the ball to bounce high and maintain speed after it hits the ground. Backspin will cause the ball to bounce low and take speed off the ball on the bounce.

ALL ABOUT TENNIS

Tennis is one of the most popular individual sports in the world. In tennis the player uses a racquet to hit a ball over a net into the opponents court. The ball must be kept in play and can only bounce one time on the court surface before the opponent must strike the ball back over the net. The standard ball is made up of felt over hollow rubber. Tennis is often played with one player per side (singles) or with two players per side (doubles). An early version of Tennis started out in the 16th century in France where players would yell "tenez" when starting a game giving the game the name Tennis. Later the game would be refined in England in the 19th century as lawn tennis to more resemble the sport we play today.
